Osaka

Osaka is Japan's kitchen and its most relaxed big city, where the point of the trip is to eat well and stay out late. It is smaller and friendlier than Tokyo, and it makes an easy base for day trips to Kyoto, Nara, and Himeji.

Where to stay

Namba and Dotonbori

The neon-lit center of the city, where the canal, the running Glico sign, and a wall of food stalls keep going late into the night.

Shinsekai

A retro, slightly rough-edged district under Tsutenkaku tower, built for kushikatsu and cheap standing bars.

Kita (Umeda)

The polished northern hub around Osaka Station, with department-store food halls, rooftop views, and a maze of underground dining arcades.

Nakazakicho

A low-rise pocket of old houses turned into cafes, vintage shops, and small galleries, a short walk from Umeda.

Don't miss

  • Eat through Dotonbori

Takoyaki, okonomiyaki, and kushikatsu from stalls along the canal, best on an empty stomach and an open mind.

  • Kushikatsu in Shinsekai

Skewered, breaded, and deep-fried everything, with one rule the locals enforce: no double-dipping the communal sauce.

  • Osaka Castle and its park

The reconstructed keep is photogenic from the moat, and the surrounding park is a good spot for blossoms or a picnic.

  • Kuromon Ichiba Market

A covered market for fresh seafood, grilled scallops, and fruit; go in the morning before stalls sell out.

  • Day trip to Nara

About forty minutes by train to bowing deer, the great bronze Buddha at Todai-ji, and quiet temple paths.

  • A night out in Namba

Tiny bars, standing izakaya, and the easy, talkative crowd Osaka is known for.

When to go

Late March to early April for cherry blossoms, or October to November for cool, clear days. Skip the humid heat of July and August. The Tenjin Matsuri in late July is a great festival but draws heavy crowds, so plan around it.

Good to know

How many days do I need in Osaka?

Two to three days covers the food, the castle, and a relaxed night out. Many people use it as a base and day-trip to Kyoto and Nara from here.

Is Osaka worth visiting if I'm already going to Kyoto?

Yes, especially for the food and nightlife, which have a more freewheeling energy than Kyoto. The two cities are about 25 to 30 minutes apart on the JR Special Rapid, so it is easy to do both.

What food is Osaka known for?

Street food above all: takoyaki (octopus balls), okonomiyaki (savory pancakes), and kushikatsu (fried skewers). The local word kuidaore means to eat yourself broke.

Is Osaka easy to get around?

Very. The subway and JR loop line reach almost everywhere, an ICOCA or Suica card makes it tap-and-go, and the central districts are walkable.
